Vasco Martins is a Cape Verdean musician and composer. He currently lives in Calhau, Cape Verde.
Within the Cape Verdean musical panorama, Vasco Martins can be considered as unique. A composer who denies labeling, he can be considered a classical musician due to his incursions in music for symphonic orchestra, but he can also be considered a new age musician due to instrumental compositions, mainly using synthesizers, but in either case, always inspired by traditional Capeverdean music.
Self-taught, he begins his studies in 1974. Joins the musical group Colá in 1976, but then moves to Portugal and afterwards to France to continue his musical training. In 1979 he recorded his first LP. Back in Cape Verde, he created most of his work as a composer and instrumentalist, but also as a musicologist and producer. At the moment, he is one of the few musicians in Cape Verde whose main professional occupation lies only in music.
