The Tabanka Museum/Assomada Cultural Centre was developed during 1999 and officially opened in February 2000 by the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Carlos Veiga.
Its creation resulted from an effective interaction between government bodies responsible for cultural affairs, local authorities and civil society in the municipality, fulfilling the aim of creating a space to promote and stimulate the cultural life of the interior of Santiago in general, and Santa Catarina Municipality in particular.
The Centre provides an official venue for cultural activities, guaranteeing quality participations from both artists and audiences.
The Tabanka Museum is housed in the renovated building of the former Treasury and Post Office, located in the centre of Assomada and considered part of its historical and cultural heritage.
Today, following the restoration and expansion works, the museum plays a very important role in the life of the city and the municipality. The building has been designed to host all types of activities, cultural and otherwise. It has put on a range of exhibitions, as well as being used for occasional or regular training programmes, shows, conferences and talks, always having a strong educational emphasis.
The Tabanka Museum is a non-profit cultural organisation that seeks to use all the means at its disposal to encourage, support and display the arts in general, and visual arts in particular, with a view to promote the cultural development of the people of Cape Verde.
To this end, it also houses a functioning library and offers language courses and other educational services that provide support for exhibitions, as well as showing quality films and holding musical concerts of artistic and cultural interest.
The Tabanka Museum is one of the first multi-purpose cultural centres in the interior of the island of Santiago, and has the facilities to host all types of events linked to a wide range of creative arts, including painting, sculpture, engraving, architecture, design, furniture, fashion, music, dance, theatre, cinema and literature.
The Tabanka Museum/Assomada Cultural Centre is open to the public from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm.
