Identity
“The history of our archipelago shows us that we are an entity created from the outside and in order to serve it. We have survived at the heart of the islands, against all tides and winds, but we were (are) facing outwards. And, because we were led from a far, according to interests that were not our own, because were cast into oblivion, into ostracism, because we are victims of a system that only contributed far and wide to our alienation as a people with an own identity, it is imperative that we look closely at ourselves, identifying ourselves with our true cultural roots without any shame whatsoever. The men and women of Cape Verde urgently need to know and take hold of their history; need to give value to the positive aspects of their culture, cement of the Nation that we are and mainstay of national unity; need to eradicate alienation, assuming entirely and unreservedly their historical and cultural dimension.”
