Roberto Duarte Silva (Santo Antão Island, 1837 — Paris, 1889) was a remarkable Cape Verdean chemist, having distinguished himself in the field of Organic Chemistry.
Duarte Silva started working at the age of 14 as an apprentice in an apprentice pharmacy, having later left for Lisbon, where he worked in Farmácia Azevedo and studied at Escola de Farmácia. He lived for some years in Macau and Hong Kong, where he opened his own pharmacy. In 1863 he went to France, to the city of Paris, where he completed a degree in Physical Sciences. In Paris he worked in laboratories and taught in several schools, becoming a distinguished scientist, especially in the field of Organic Chemistry.
Duarte Silva was professor to the chemist Charles Lepierre, who settled in Portugal in 1888, at his suggestion.
