José Casimiro Tavares was born on March 25th, 1918, in Moita. Orphan of a mother at the age of 4, he was raised with his poor grandparents, studying until the 4th grade, being approved with distinction. He started working in a barbershop in Moita, where he studied Portuguese, English, French and Russian.
He was a fighter for freedom and rebelled against the injustices of the dictatorship, never letting himself be broken even when he was arrested by PIDE.
In his barbershop, he taught how to read and write dozens of fellow citizens, rescuing them from illiteracy. He taught guitar and viola to many others, composed countless poems that he himself sometimes played by ear, since he did not know music, offering them to many singers and fado singers who, even today, proudly sing them.
After the 25th of April, and in the first municipal elections, he was elected President of the Town Council of Moita, a position he held for three years, with the dignity and modesty of a humble man, as always. He died on 1 November 1990.
The Municipality of Moita awards the Medal of Honour of the Municipality, posthumously, to José Casimiro Tavares, for his humanist dimension, as poet and popular musician, mayor and defender of democracy and freedom, dimension that made him a reference for the Municipality of Moita.
