Ildo Lobo
- Música
Cape Verdean singer, Ildo Neves de Sousa Lobo was born in 1953, in Pedra do Lume, on the island of Sal, in Cape Verde, son of a serenade animator. It was through the influence of his father that Ildo Lobo became a singer.
In 1970, at the age of 17, he moved to the city of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, located on the island of Santiago, to attend high school. Three years later he was invited to join the musical group Os Tubarões, where he replaced his cousin Luís Lobo, who was the vocalist.
In 1976 Os Tubarões traveled to Holland where they recorded the band's first two albums. Until the group's dissolution in 1994, they released albums such as Tema para Dois, Tabanca, Pépé Lopi, Dionsinho Cabral, Tchon di Morgado, Os Tubarões ao Vivo and Porton de Nôs Ilha. Ildo Lobo was always the vocalist. The group composed mornas, coladeiras, political themes, etc.
In 1994 the group separated and Ildo Lobo started a career as a solo singer. Only three years later, he recorded his first album, entitled Nôs Morna, which was a tribute to his father.
Two years later, the Cape Verdean singer re-recorded one of his most successful songs, "Djonsinho Cabral", whose lyrics, written by Rui Machado, were allusive to Xanana Gusmão and to Timor-Leste's struggle for independence. This new version of "Djonsinho Cabral" was included in the collection Música de Intervenção Cabo-Verdiana.
In 2001 he recorded a new album of originals, with the name Intelectual.
Ildo Lobo usually did not compose and thus was able to disseminate songs from several generations of Cape Verdean artists. Even so, the musician composed some songs such as "Nha Testamento", for his solo album Nôs Morna, or Zebra, interpreted by Os Tubarões and also by Cesária Évora, the great reference of Cape Verdean music at international level.
Ildo Lobo died on October 20th, 2004, victim of a heart attack, when he was 51 years old. Before dying he left ready a new record, entitled Unconditional-Confidence.
