He was born in Assomada, Santiago Island. In 1987 he traveled to Portugal where he did his studies and later also lived in Rotterdam, Holland. In 1999 he recorded his first album - "Kel Tempu". The second was recorded two years later, (December 2001) - "Nha Actriz Principal" which earned him his first Golden Disc and several shows in Africa, Europe and America.
In 2010 he took a break in his career to focus on the implementation of the Cape Verde Music Awards - CVMA.
He was honored by the City of Santa Catarina on November 25th, 2015. He was also honored by Santa Cruz City Council (CV) and Mayor of Boston, Massachusetts (USA) Martin J. Walsh in May 2015 and by Radio Station "Nha Terra" (Roxbury) in recognition of his 15 Years of Career and contribution he made to Cape Verdean music culture. Cultural projects with impact such as "Talentu Strela" and "Cabo Verde Music Awards - CVMA". In 2016, Mayor Bill Carpenter - City of Brockton, Massachusetts (USA) honored Gilyto and his CVMA team for the 6th edition of the Cape Verde Music Awards.
Gilyto is now working on the project "PALOP MUSIC AWARDS - PALOPMA 2017".
