Beaches
The island of Boa Vista has the best beaches in Cape Verde, with no less than 26, some of which are around 10 kilometres long, such as Chave, Curralinho, Lacacão, Curral Velho and Boa Esperança. Maio, with twelve beaches, albeit smaller, follows in length of coastal areas, with highlights including the beaches of Porto Inglês and Morro. However Sal, with its’ 12 beaches, is the most sought area for beach tourism, thanks to the splendour of the Bay of Santa Maria, with more than 4km of plentiful sand and emerald waters, with the beach of Ponta Preta following to the west.
S. Vicente is also an island with ten beaches, with the beaches of Baía das Gatas, Calhau and Praia Grande standing out, as well as the small but inviting beach of Laginha in Mindelo. There are also attractive beaches in S. Nicolau, Tarrafal and Barril, along with the natural pool of Juncalinho. In Santo Antão, the most important beach is in the west, in the Tarrafal of Monte Trigo, and it has black sand from the volcanic lava like the beaches of Fogo, as Fonte de Vila, S. Filipe, Salinas, Ladrão and Fajã.
In Santiago, the beach that is most sought after by residents of the island is that of Tarrafal, as well as the Prainha and Quebra Canela in the capital, S. Francisco and Praia Baixo to the north.
Finally, in Brava, the Fajã d’Água has a most welcoming natural pool, and the Praia d’Aguada, which is hard to reach, is also attractive.
