João Fortes

Master João Fortes, trained in the field of Cape Verdean craftsmanship, joined the National Center for Craftsmanship (CNA) as a plastic artist for over 30 years. With the motto "don't let the traditional weaving die", he participated in the first training program taught by the Center, at the level of traditional weaving, tapestry and batuk. He considers the knowledge transmitted by the masters Bela Duarte, Luísa Queirós and Manuel Figueira, founding members of the CNA, as fundamental to his career, both at a technical level and as a trainer.

It is the oldest element of the National Centre for Handicrafts and Design. He has already seen the space that helped him change his name twice. He considers himself to be an artisan artist, because as a passionate painter, he manages to interconnect the two artistic expressions in an exemplary way.

With an international career in the plastic arts, João Fortes continues to work on behalf of national crafts, particularly in vocational training. He is proud of many of his students, some of whom are already well established, who currently have their own studios. His main goal is to continue the work developed, in order to increasingly enhance the Cape Verdean culture and its traditional craftsmanship.
