Gregório Vaz (Codé di Dona)

Gregório Vaz better known as Codé di Dona, was born in São Domingos on July 10, 1940 and died in Praia on January 5, 2010. He was a Cape Verdean musician and composer. He is considered to be one of the key figures in funaná, a musical genre once confined to the island of Santiago and now with universal resonance.

Professionally always connected to agriculture and grazing, retired as a forest ranger, Codé di Dona composed classical themes from the Cape Verdean national repertoire, such as "Febri Funaná", "Fomi 47", "Praia Maria", "Yota Barela", "Rufon Baré" and "Pomba", among dozens of others.

Codé di Dona was also an excellent accordion player (or bagpipe), the concertina, one of the paradigmatic instruments of funaná, along with the ferrinho. As an instrumentalist, Codé di Dona recorded two albums: the first, Kap Vert, in 1996, and the second, in 1998, Codé-di-Dona, which was a gold record in Portugal that same year.
