He was born in Assomada on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde, but immigrated to the Netherlands at the age of six. He built a great career as a singer, songwriter and entertainer.
The combination of sound and performance inspired by Michael Jackson, mixed with his Afro-Caribbean musical background, allowed him to create a new and unique musical style that he called 'Caboswing', Cape Verde's pop dance music.
Since 1991 Gil has released albums. His platinum and gold records with countless megahits such as: Sweet Honey, Maria Julia, Nos líder, Moda bitchu etc. sold more than 500,000 copies. Many people have been inspired by his agitated music and follow the path he has traced out. Semedo was renamed the 'King of Pop' of Cape Verde.
Gil had an 8-story fall, in which he miraculously survived having lost part of his left leg. In his music, he sings about the lessons of life and the achievements that took him to where he is.
