Born in Cape Verde in 1933, he lived in Portugal, where he graduated in Romanesque Philology from the University of Coimbra.
In France, she was a Reader of Portuguese at the University of Caen (Normandy), in Algeria, and a lecturer at the École Supérieure d'Interprétariat.
In all these countries, and also in Senegal, Guinea-Conakry, Morocco and Cuba was in the framework of the struggle for independence of Cape Verde.
Together with her husband, Abílio Duarte, leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde.
She worked in the Ministries of Education and Culture, having held the positions of Director of the Office of Studies, Director-General of Culture and Director of National Heritage.
She dedicated herself to research on Cape Verdean language and culture. She has published two books on Cape Verdean Creole.
