Manuel António Martins

Manuel António Martins (Braga, 1772-1845) was a Portuguese colonial administrator.
Son of João António Cosqueiro and Bernarda di Autrello, of Italian origin, having arrived in Cape Verde in 1792, he was 71st Governor of Cape Verde and Guinea between 1833 and 1835, appointed royal advisor, honorary vice-consultant of the United States and the main responsible for the settlement of the island of Sal, having been appointed as Mayor, having set slaves on the island since 1799, to explore the salt pans of Pedra de Lume, discovered a swamp suitable for this activity, a few steps from a good dock. The access to the swamp had to be cleared by slave hands, who carved in 1804 the tunnel that allowed the exploration of the salt flats.
In 1830, he officially establishes the village of Santa Maria, on the island of Sal, having later increased his business to the village of Pedra de Lume. Main shipowner of Cape Verde and administrator of the trade of Urzela, for several times rescued and defrayed the expenses of food in times of hunger. He married Maria Josefa Ferreira, daughter of Anicete António Ferreira Álvares Mendes.
