José Baptista de Sousa (Lisbon/02.03.1904 - 03.12.1967/Lisbon), born in the then parish of Camões, was a Medical Colonel who graduated in 1927 from the Faculty of the University of Lisbon, where he was assistant to the chair of Surgical Pathology. From 1928 to 1929, he successfully attended, at the Main Military Hospital, the Technical Course of Militia Officers and then ran for the Permanent Board of Medical Officers, having been promoted to ensign in 1929 and, reaching major in 1953 and, passed to reserve in 1963, for health reasons.
He served in several military units and establishments such as the National Republican Guard (1936-1942), the Regional Military Hospitals nº 2 and nº 3 and the Main Military Hospital of Lisbon (1951-1961), where he was Head of the Surgical Clinic. He was also Head of the Surgery Services of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology. Since 1964 he has been a Surgery Consultant for the Military Health Service Direction.
On January 17, 1942, Baptista de Sousa was appointed to join the Expeditionary Forces to Cape Verde. From February 22 to September 10, 1944, he stayed in S. Vicente, as director of the Main Military Hospital of Cape Verde, the surgeon-physician of the military but also of civilians, which earned him many local sympathies. They called him "human engineer" and at the farewell the population offered him the yacht Morabeza. He also showed civic courage by declaring in the death certificates the famine, contrary to the official guidelines. From 1947 to 1950, he served in the Medical-Surgical School of Goa.
José Baptista de Sousa was awarded the degree of official of the Order of Avis and, in Mindelo (S. Vicente), the hospital received his name: Hospital Baptista de Sousa. He also inspired the mornas Dr. Baptista de Sousa de Béléza (Xavier Cruz) and, Engenheiro Humano of Maestro Jotamont (Jorge Monteiro).
