Gabriel Mariano

José Gabriel Lopes da Silva, known as Gabriel Mariano, (Vila de Ribeira Grande, 18th May, 1928 — Lisbon, 18th February 2002) was a judge, poet, short story writer and Cape Verdean essayist.
He studied at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon and graduated in Law and was a judge in Lisbon. He returned to Cape Verde in the 1950s, where he participated in the creation of the newspaper Restauração (with Jorge Pedro Barbosa and others), the Suplemento Cultural (with Carlos Alberto Monteiro and others) and the Boletim Cabo Verde. His intense cultural activity ended up being considered subversive by the local government, which deported him to Mozambique.
He has published poems, novels and essays in both Portuguese and Creole.
In 1976 he received the prize for African Literature for the short story book Vida e Morte by João Cabafume.
