Tchalê Figueira was born in Mindelo, São Vicente Island, in 1953. At the age of 17, for national political reasons, he decided to leave Cape Verde for Rotterdam. However, he remains in this city for a short time, traveling through several countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas. In 1974, he settled in Basel (Switzerland), where he attended the school of fine arts, defining the Swiss territory as the basis of his artistic evolution. He returns to Cape Verde in 1985 and lives between Praia, where he owns a studio, and Mindelo, where he opened the "Ponta D'Praia" gallery in December 2014.
A large and versatile artist, Tchalê Figueira has a vast pictorial collection, recognised in several countries, as a result of the various exhibitions held throughout his artistic career. He has a considerable literary work of short stories and poetry, including "All the Shipwrecked People of the World" (1992), "Where the Feelings Meet" (1998) and "The Blue and the Light" (2002), "Ptolemy and his Journey of Circum-navigation" (2005), "Solitary" (2005) and "Basel Stories" (2011). In 2008 he was awarded by the Prix Fondation Blanchère at the Dakar Biennale.
