Amândio Cabral

Amândio Cabral, born in São Nicolau, Cape Verde, is the composer and singer who first took Cape Verdean music to Europe and beyond. By bringing the "morna" and other Cape Verdean music to audiences around the world, he opened the way for Cesária Évora, Fantcha, and the many other Cape Verdean musicians who would follow him - and who sing his songs today.
Since 1965, Amândio Cabral has made his home in San Francisco, where he earned a second career as a jazz composer and performer, and where he is known for his unique fusion of jazz and Cape Verdean rhythms.

And he was honored in Cape Verde. In the summer of 2000, marking the 25th anniversary of Cape Verde's independence ceremony in motion, the Republic of Cape Verde awarded Amândio Cabral a special medal for his contributions to Cape Verde and World Music.
