Manuel d'Novas was born in Santo Antão, in Penha de França. At the age of 12, he went to S. Vicente where he began a self-taught learning on the guitar, and soon began to accompany the older musicians. Later he learned some chord theory from another morna composer, Olavo Bilac.
He became a seafarer and the inter-island trips contributed to the deepening of the soul of the morna. Dakar, Senegal's capital, introduced him, through the Cape Verdean community in this city, to the popular music in vogue at the time, the Merengue, Samba, etc., which also contributed to his technical knowledge of the guitar.
In 1964 he emigrated and got to know the world, a situation that allowed him to have a more global vision of music, which, according to his words, was the most important thing in his life.
A very respected composer by the Cape Verdean public, for his talent, he is undoubtedly one of the greatest musicians of the morna after B. Leza.
