José Maria Barreto is a prestigious Cape Verdean artist who was born in 1957 in Assomada and currently lives in the City of Praia, (Santiago Island).
In contact with the plastic arts since very young, he graduated in St. Petersburg (Russia) with the degree of "Master of Fine Art" at the Academy of Fine Arts in the course of Monumental Painting in 1985, where he refined the perception, the language and the aesthetic achievement. After his academic experience, he returned to the island of Santiago where, between 1985 and 1988, he taught in his native land. After several positions, in 1994 he headed the department of Cultural Animation of the National Institute of Culture (INAC).
