Manuel Fortes

Manuel Fortes

Manuel Fortes, a native of São Vicente and currently responsible for the National Centre for Crafts and Design, soon began an academic career entirely dedicated to traditional crafts. His training began precisely in the Centro Nacional de Artesanato (National Centre for Handicrafts), with João Fortes as tutor and some of its founding members, namely Bela Duarte, Luísa Queirós and Manuel Figueira.

Although he continues to exercise sporadically the activity of craftsman, he devotes almost exclusively to the professional training of new craftsmen, because as he says, "the knowledge has to continue to be passed on to younger generations, so as not to let die that precious national asset, which is our craftsmanship".
